Regina Meet Social

The social for the final quiz meet will be on campus with a variety of games inside and outside. Different groups will rotate through the various activities so we are looking for adult volunteers to assist us in leading the different stations. If you are a coach, official, or parent available to help out, please indicate on your registration form or email the registration email address. We will pass your names on to Rob Gosselin and he will contact you with more information. Please tell your quizzers to come prepared to be outside in whatever weather comes the first weekend in May.

May Regina Meet Registration Information

May Regina Meet Registration Information

The final quiz meet of the Luke quizzing year will be held May 2-4 at Western Christian High School in Regina. Registration will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday at WCHS. The meet will conclude with awards on Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:00 p.m. The cost will be $45 per person.

REGISTRATIONS ARE DUE TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2008. Please download and fill out the registration form and email it to the registration email address. Make sure to list the number of teams in each division.

Question material content includes all of the Luke quizzing material with 20 question quizzes in the A, B, and C divisions. This will be the final district meet of the Luke quizzing year with 45% of the “A” quizzers personal averages going towards their overall year average. Quizzers need to bring sleeping bags, pillows, and towels as well any personal items required for the meets. Luggage needs to be identified with each quizzer’s name and church group.

Erin Petty, officials’ coordinator, would appreciate knowing about any adults coming to the meet that would be available to help with some of the officiating as scorekeepers or answer judges. For this meet, the registration cost for answer judges and scorekeepers is $20 to help cover the cost of the meals.

We are still working out the final details for the social. Information regarding the social will be posted on the website at a later date.

This year we will be billeting all of the quizzing group off campus. If you know of any Regina homes available to take billets, please contact Corinne Lynnes from Westhill Park. We will be working hard to find enough billets for this meet as this has been one of our main challenges the last couple of quiz meets.

We might be placing some of the boys at the school on the gym floor (30-40). If any adults are willing to chaperon, please indicate on your registration form. Foams will be provided for at least the adults. There are showers available in the gym change rooms and breakfast will be provided in the cafeteria for those staying on campus. Please remind all boys to bring a towel in case they are billeted on campus.

Coaches, if any of your quizzers are interested in doing a special music number during the Sunday morning worship service at the final quiz meet, please indicate this on your registration form or email the quiz registration email regarding the special music.

Awards will be presented for Club 145, Club 300, and Grade 12 quizzers. Coaches, please contact Ernie Munchinsky with the awards information for your quizzers by WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8. We need to know the name and number of years in quizzing for each Grade 12 quizzer plus the number of Club 145 and Club 300 awards for your quizzing group. Ernie’s contact information is available on the CMQ directory. If you do not have access to a directory, please send the information to the wccregistrations email address below.

Please remind Grade 12 quizzers who are interested in attending Ambrose University or another Alliance college to submit scholarship applications before April 21.

If you have questions or concerns with completing the registration form, please contact Angela Davis. My number is available in the directory.

Send registration forms to:

The “Club 145” Challenge

Here’s how to test your quizzers for the “Club 145:”

1. Print each reference for the 145 verses on a separate piece of paper.
2. Put all the slips of paper into a container.
3. The quizzer draws 15 slips of paper.
4. Five of the verses must be quoted; the remaining 10 can be finish-the-verse. The verses must be recited word-perfect, just like at a quiz meet. The tester can give three “helps” in one testing session. A help would be a key word or a key phrase.

You decide how much time you will allow for each verse. At quiz meets, quizzers are allowed 30 seconds. However, no time limit has been set for this challenge. The quizzer can be given as much time as they need to repeat a verse until it is word perfect, if you decide to allow that. They must stay within the limit of three “helps” per test session.

Quizzers can take the club challenge as often as they need to pass the test. Each time, they must put all the pieces of paper back in the container and draw again. You decide how you want to manage this, whether they have to wait for another day, just a little later the same day or immediately after a “failed” attempt.

The “Club 300” challenge is handled the same way.

1. Print each reference of the 300 verses on a separate piece of paper.
2. Put all the slips of paper into a container.
3. The quizzer draws 30 slips of paper.
4. Ten of the verses must be quoted; the remaining 20 can be finish-the-verse. In this test, the quizzer is allowed six “helps” in one testing session. The verses must be recited word-perfect, just like at a quiz meet. A help would be a key word or a key phrase.

Great West Canadian Meet

With the Living Hope District competition now over, quizzers can start thinking about the Great West Canadian meet. This year, it will be held for the first time at Camp Chamisall in the Rocky Mountain foothills.

Because of the additional costs for the camp, as well as the additional travel distance, the cost for this meet will be going up to $200 per quizzer. To apply, please send the application form to greatwest09@cmdquizzing.org by March 27th.

Grade 12 Scholarships

Canadian Midwest Quizzing is administering three scholarships available to graduating grade 12 quizzers. Ambrose University College is offering scholarships of $2000 and $1000 to students attending Ambrose. The Mrs. Neufeld Memorial scholarship offers a scholarship of $250 to a student attending an Alliance college or university. These scholarships may be applied for by any graduating grade 12 quizzer planning to attend an eligible school. To apply, fill in and submit the appropriate application form:
Decisions on these scholarships will be announced at the May Finals!

Living Hope Meet Saturday Night - Action Required

There is a great Amazing Race social planned for the Living Hope Quiz Meet on Saturday night. The coach for each church will need to bring a signed waiver to the meet registration Friday night for each quizzer participating in the Amazing Race. Please click on the link below to download the waiver. The other link explains a bit about the Amazing Race.

www.cmdquizzing.org/info/waiver-release.pdf

www.cmdquizzing.org/info/ScheduleA.doc

Please note: No one is required to pay the $2 mentioned in the waiver. The social cost is included in the meet registration costs.
Quizzers do not need to bring skates to the meet for that portion of the Amazing Race. Skates and helmets will be provided.

If each quizzing group could give us an idea of how many of their quizzers will be participating in the Amazing Race, this that would be a great help. Coaches, please indicate on your registration form whether your church will be participating in the Amazing Race or the coffeehouse so we have approximate numbers for the social. Thank you.

On Saturday evening we will have a special guest speaker - Joe Dueck, the founder of Joe's Place Youth Centre in Moose Jaw. The purpose of this center is - "To make a difference in Moose Jaw by helping every youth reach their full and God-given potential". We would like to help them out in their ministry so on Saturday night we will be taking up a free will offering to encourage them. Please pass this along to your quizzers - this is an excellent opportunity for youth to help out other youth.

NEWS

Each year representatives from CMQ visit our favorite island in the Caribbean to encourage our fellow quizzers and friends. Although we are not able to send a team this winter we are pleased to learn that Llew & Esther Peters will be enjoying some time there. Please pray for them, their valuable luggage and their arrival during the noon hour this Monday.

This is a real answer to prayer as Tom continues to recover and was concerned about not being able to go this year. We praise God for his continual provision for quizzing in our district and other parts of the world. We also thank our quizzing family for the special card from the meet, the many calls and prayers on his behalf.

March Living Hope Quiz Meet Registration Information

The second quiz meet of 2009 will be held Mar.13-15 at Living Hope Alliance Church in Regina, SK. Registration will be 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The meet will wrap up after service on Sunday (10 a.m.). A bag lunch will be provided.

REGISTRATIONS ARE DUE TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2009. Please download and fill out the registration form and return it to the registration email address. Early registrations are appreciated as they greatly assist with the billeting process. Make sure to list the number of teams in each division and include any vehicles that can be used to transport quizzers to billets. If your church will not be attending the quiz meet, please send a simple email to the registration email address to assist us in the planning process.

The cost will be $25 per person. Coaches, please bring one cheque for the registrations of your church group. This will help the registration process to run smoother. The cheques can be made out to “Canadian Midwest Quizzing” or “CMQ”. Quiz masters, scorekeepers, and answer judges are not required to pay the registration for this meet.

Question material content will include Luke chapters 1-3, 9-11, 13-19, and 21-22 with 20 question quizzes in the A, B, and C divisions. This will be the second district meet of the Luke quizzing year with 20% of the “A” quizzers personal averages going towards their overall year average. Quizzers need to bring winter gear, sleeping bags, pillows, and any personal items required for the meet. Luggage needs to be identified with each quizzer’s name and church group. Quizzers need to bring indoor shoes as they will be asked to remove outdoor footwear when in the church.

The social will be a choice of two events – accept the challenge of the Amazing Race or hang out at the coffeehouse. Coaches will need to transport the quizzers during the Amazing Race.

We require extra assistance from the coaches and adults attending this quiz meet. Living Hope will be following the standard CMQ billeting process as well as their church’s plan to protect. This means that extra precautions will be taken for this particular quiz meet. All adults residing in billet homes will have police checks unless we can provide 2 coaches or adults with police checks to stay in the home with the quizzers. If you are an adult (over 18) attending this quiz meet and are willing to stay with quizzers and provide us with your police check, this would greatly assist us in obtaining enough homes for billets for this meet.

If you are willing to provide a police check, please list that on your registration form and mail a copy to the Canadian Midwest Quizzing, southern zone coordinator, Corinne Lynnes. (Her address in on the registration form.) The police checks will be kept with CMQ’s records in the Christian & Missionary Alliance district office. Police checks conducted in the last 2 years with be considered current. Thank you for your initiative to help out in this way.

People can obtain police check certification in one of two ways.
1. Ask your local police detachment to conduct a criminal record check and provide you with a letter of endorsement; or
2. Complete the online "Plan to Protect For U & Me!" at http://www.winningkidsinc.ca/. This provides a record check plus a short online tutorial on abuse prevention. We highly recommend this program.

If you have questions or concerns with completing the registration form, please contact Angela Davis.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Please keep this quiz meet in your prayers as this is Elim Tabernacle's first time hosting a District Quiz Meet. They are excited and ready to welcome 380 registered guests. We thank God for the weather change and pray for good traveling conditions for all of you.

Regretfully, Tom and Judy will not be able to attend this meet as Tom is having surgery to remove a lesion that is attached to the inside of his skull. This surgery is Friday morning at 8:45. Please pray that God will direct the surgeons hands and that there will be no complications or infections. We hope for a speedy recovery so we can see you all at the next meet.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Many of you may have heard over the weekend of the tragic murder of Emily Joy Stuaffer from Edson, AB. This young girl was a quizzer with the Western Canada District. Please join us as a district along with many others in prayer for the family during this time. You can find more details regarding the situation at http://www.wcdquizzing.org

Also we have not found a host church for the November zone meet for the Saskatoon and west/central area. We do not want to cancel this meet but time is running out so please pray that someone would volunteer.

Coaches Quizzing Directory Information

We are collecting the information for the 2008 – 2009 Canadian Midwest Quizzing Directory. This directory contains a list of all the churches involved with quizzing in the Canadian Midwest District. For each church, the coaches and their contact information are listed along with the names, grades, and gender of each of the quizzers. This information is used by the committee and host churches to plan quiz meets.

This directory will be handed out at the November quiz meet and mailed to the head coaches of the churches not in attendance. This information will not be posted on the website.

This year we are asking coaches to fill in the church or youth group that each quizzer regularly attends. This information will NOT be posted on the directory. It will only be used by the CMQ committee to maintain an even distribution of churches within the district and for plan to protect accountability. If a quizzer does not regularly attend a church, simply put "no church".

In order to prepare the directory, we need each of the head coaches to fill out the following form and send it to the email listed below as soon as possible. We need to receive all of the information by Thursday, October 9, in order to prepare the directory for use to plan the November meets.

Form to fill out for directory:
www.cmdquizzing.org/info/Directory08.rtf

Email to send the form to:
directory@cmdquizzing.org

Here are a couple of guidelines to clarify the process:

1. Please list all of the coaches involved with your church quizzing group. We need the contact information for the head coach and will gladly include the contact information for the other coaches if it is supplied.

2. If you are a new head coach or committee member, please provide a head and shoulders photo. Just attach the electronic picture to your email with you send in the directory information.

3. List all quizzers involved with your quizzing program in last name alphabetical order if possible. If the quizzers do not attend meets, they can still be included on the directory.

4. If you have any questions, please contact Angela Davis. (My number is listed under Shellbrook if you don’t have a copy of last year’s directory.)
